Activities reported to pick up in second quarter
Bainbridge Island, WA – April 7, 2011 – Avalara (www.avalara.com), North America’s leading provider of automated, up-to-date sales and use tax solutions, has issued its monthly rate and boundary update for April, automatically providing hundreds of new rates, rules and jurisdiction boundary definitions to the company’s thousands of licensed users.
In preparation for the second quarter, taxing authorities made 348 changes in 33 states with Kansas, Oklahoma and Washington accounting for 61% of all April rate and rule changes. The second sales tax holiday of 2011 will be hosted by Missouri on energy efficient appliances from April 19 to April 25. For a summary of 2011 rate and rule changes go to www.avalara.com/Rate-and-Rule-Change-Report.
Last year, Departments of Revenue implemented over 5,500 sales tax rate and rule changes across the U.S. Even though changes slowed down a bit in the first quarter of 2011, activities seem to be increasing going into spring. This further complicates tax compliance for businesses trying to keep abreast of the changes without using automated calculation services.
“These changes are a good representation of exactly how complex and difficult sales tax compliance can be for businesses of all sizes,” said Mike Gardner, Avalara’s vice president of compliance. “The year 2010 saw a remarkable number of taxability rule changes and 2011 looks to be just as busy. As a result, an automated web-based solution like AvaTax is really the only way for companies to ensure that their calculations and collections are based on the most accurate, up-to-date information and thereby reduce their exposure to audits and penalties.”
Avalara monitors more than 17,000 taxing jurisdictions and provides – on a monthly basis – its more than 40,000 registered users and on-demand sales tax management clients with the most accurate and up-to-date rate and boundary information available.
