We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced Senior UX Researcher to join our team.

Avalara's Product Experience team is growing, and we need an experienced Senior UX Researcher to help us gather insights about our users and be a champion of their needs. This position will partner with product teams to identify research opportunities, take the lead on designing qualitative research, conduct usability studies, drive quantitative research, and help our team craft compelling experiences.

Job Duties:

  • Drive user research strategy to create personas, map user journeys, validate designs and product concepts, and document user behavior and attitudes

  • Develop and moderate usability studies

  • Design, administer, and analyze data from surveys that help us understand the customer's experience at every stage of the product life cycle

  • Leverage internal data sources to quantify user attributes that complement other research activities

  • Present and evangelize research insights across the organization and throughout the product development lifecycle

  • Translate research findings into clear insights that can be turned into actionable product requirements

  • Welcome feedback and collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders (Product, Design, Content, Engineering, etc.)

  • Travel: approx. 5%

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Cognitive or Experimental Psychology, Computer Science, or Information Science.
    [In lieu of professional degrees, 5-10 years equivalent professional experience]

  • Track record of driving user-centered research, utilizing design thinking, and providing user-centric leadership

  • Exceptional behavioral data-collection and analysis skills

  • Strong experience integrating qualitative and quantitative research methodologies

  • We expect that a good researcher can learn tools. We currently use Miro for brainstorming, Figma for prototyping, FullStory and Adobe Analytics for user analysis, UserTesting.com for usability testing, and both Qualtrics and Survey Monkey. When we're in the office, our main source of sugar is Swedish Fish.

Nice to have:

  • Experience designing, fielding, and analyzing surveys, with strong statistical skills

  • Experience using Adobe Analytics to surface user insights

  • Familiarity with Accounting, Tax Compliance, or related domains

  • SQL skills and data science experience

  • Experience with heuristic best practices for mobile design and/or conducting research on mobile designs a plus

Experience:

  • 5+ years' experience in applied product research with demonstrated impact

  • 3+ years' experience conducting research within a product organization focused on SaaS solutions.

  • 3+ years' experience conducting research for products with complex organizational hierarchies and persona sets

  • Management experience a plus

  • Portfolio (if possible) showcasing applied knowledge of usability and user-centered design. UX documents that include personas, journey maps, flows, and testing plans a plus
