Illinois Leniency for Taxpayers in Tornado-affected Areas

  • Mar 19, 2012 | Susan McLain

The Illinois Department of Revenue “…will waive penalties and interest for taxpayers who cannot file or pay on time as a result of the recent tornado.”

It is important for those taxpayers who are filing their sales and use tax returns late to not note that they “…should file or pay as soon as possible” according to the state. If the taxpayer files hard copy returns, then it is important that they write “'Tornado – Feburary 2012’ in red on the outside of their envelope and on top of the tax return.”

When filing, include a brief written description that explains why you could not file timely. For those who file electronically, notification should be sent via email to rev.tornadofeb2012 at Illinois.gov along with:

  • Name;
  • Account identification number;
  • Period that is affected;
  • Brief explanation why the return will be late; and
  • Estimate of when you believe you will file or pay.
