Alabama Back to School Sales Tax Holiday 2012

Alabama will hold its seventh annual back to school sales tax holiday, from August 3, 2012 at 12:01 a.m. to August 5, 2012 at 12 midnight.

The following items will be exempt from Alabama state sales tax during the holiday:

  • Articles of clothing costing $100 or less per item
  • Computers, software and computer supplies costing $750 or less per item
  • School supplies costing $50 or less per item
  • Books costing $30 or less per item

For a complete list of exempt and non-exempt items, see the Department of Revenue's sales tax holiday bulletin.

Alabama localities may choose whether or not they wish to participate in the sales tax holiday, thereby exempting back to school items from local sales tax (list of participating localities).
