Ohio Consumers Support Online Tax Collection


A recent Ohio-specific survey performed by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) found “…that an overwhelming 92% of respondents feel it would be far easier to pay sales tax on online purchases at the point-of-purchase.”

According to a PRNewswire report, “The survey was conducted on the heels of the 2011 tax season to specifically gauge Ohio consumers’ sentiment about online sales and use tax collection.”

Ohio residents are required to report their online or out-of-state purchases on their income tax forms and pay use tax on all purchases that did not charge sales tax.

The results of the ICSC survey found:

  • 92% feel it would be easier to pay sales tax on online purchases at the point-of-purchase rather than at the end-of-the-year on their tax forms….
  • 68% understand that they are required to pay state sales or use tax on online purchases if not collected by the vendor when they file their state income tax.
  • 62% support the Congressional effort to require online retailers to collect sales tax at the point-of-purchase.

ICSC is “..the premier global trade association of the shopping center industry. Its more than 55,000 members in over 90 countries include shopping center owners, developers, managers, marketing specialists, investors, retailers and brokers, as well as academics and public officials.”

The survey was conducted by Opinion Research Corporation (ORC). 245 adults comprising 115 men and 130 women 18 years of age and older, living in private households in Ohio, were randomly selected and interviewed using a computer assisted telephone interviewing system. The survey was completed between May 3-6 and May 9-13, 2012.
