Rhode Island Interstate Bus Tax Exemption

  • Jul 6, 2012 | Will Frei

Rhode Island now exempts buses used for interstate commerce from sales and use tax and vehicle excise tax.

Previously, Rhode Island general law only exempted trucks, trailers and buses from these taxes if used by a truck company for interstate commerce. However, H 7640A extends the exemption to buses used by "...a bus company in interstate commerce..." (emphasis added).

In order to receive the exemption, a bus companies must ". . . provide a properly executed affidavit attesting to the fact that the bus is used no less than eighty percent (80%) of the time in interstate commerce" (link added).

This act went into effect when signed by the governor on June 20, 2012.
