Virginia August Sales Tax Filing Deadline Extended

Virginia sellers have until August 24, 2012 to file electronic retail sales tax returns (Forms ST-9 and ST-9CO).

According to the Virginia Department of Taxation, the filing extension provides extra time for retailers to transition to the electronic filing requirement, which requires all sellers filing retail sales tax returns to begin filing electronically over the next 13 months.

The extension especially impacts sellers who file on a monthly basis, since their first electronic filing is otherwise due August 20, 2012. Those filing on a quarterly basis must file and pay electronically beginning with the return for the quarter ending September 2013.

Virginia offers three online filing and payment options:

  • eForms -file and pay tax returns without signing up.
  • Business iFile - file and pay tax returns (sign up required).
  • Web Upload - file and pay multiple returns at the same time, or file and pay accounts that involve schedules to multiple locations (sign up required).
