California BOE Updates List of Delinquent Taxpayers
- Dec 12, 2012 | Gail Cole
The State Board of Equalization has updated its quarterly online list of the "Top 500 sales and use tax delinquencies." Making the list is a dubious distinction, indeed. New to the list is an interactive map that displays the account name and location of delinquent taxpayers and the amount owed. Yikes.
The list formerly named only the top 250 delinquent taxpayers, but new legislations allow the BOE to expand the list to a whopping 500. In addition, the new legislations preclude delinquent taxpayers from contracting with the state.
California's delinquent sales and use taxes total $593.7 million. Scanning the list, it's easy to see how that impressive total can be reached. This quarter's list adds an individual who owes $2,583,457.15 -- a number that pales when compared to the $18,629.275.00 owed by the business at the top of the list. Just think of the penalties and fees.
Since the start of this program, the California State Board of Equalization has collected more than $7 million from taxpayers who paid their debts after seeing their name on the list.
