New York: Tax Department, Auto Dealers Work Together on Sales Tax Details
- Dec 11, 2012 | Gail Cole

New York auto dealerships collect and remit more than $1 billion in sales tax revenue each year. Sales of new vehicles amount to "12.3% of all retail sales in the state… ." Given Department of Taxation and Finance to help auto dealers comply with tax laws. With that goal in mind, the department has created "A Guide to Sales Tax for Automobile Dealers."
Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Thomas H. Mattox hopes the new guide will help "make complying with tax laws easier and more business-friendly." He notes that experts from the auto industry were consulted during the creation of the guide, and that before publication, it was "reviewed by industry representatives to ensure that its format and content would be useful regarding the State's tax requirements."
The effort is appreciated. Robert Vancavage, President of the New York State Automobile Dealers Association, said, "We applaud the Department for including us in the development of this important publication." Stuart Rosenthal, Vice President of the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association, said that the new guide "will demystify complicated sales tax issues and answer many frequently asked questions."
