Michigan Prepaid Gas Sales Tax Rate Change
- Jan 25, 2013 | Gail Cole

Michigan sets a sales tax rate for prepaid gasoline. Qualified distributors of gasoline must register with the state and pay the prepaid rate of sales tax on gasoline. Rates are reviewed and made public quarterly. In Michigan, the rate must be adjusted "if the change in the statewide average retail price of a gallon of self-serve unleaded regular gasoline has been at least 10% since last changed."
The current prepaid sales tax rate in Michigan, effective through February 28, 2013, is 20.5 cents per gallon.
The new rate, effective March 1, 2013, will be 18.1 cents per gallon.
