New York to "Root-Out Tax Evaders"

  • Apr 15, 2013 | Gail Cole

New York gets serious about stop tax evasion.

The Department of Taxation and Finance announced Friday its intention to "root-out tax evaders." According to the press release, the department will expand its partnership with the State Police and bring in "veteran criminal investigators to lead the effort."

The department already works closely with State Police to find illegal cigarette traffickers and enforce cigarette tax laws. "The expanded effort reaches beyond cigarette fraud to all criminal violations of the New York State Tax Law, including sales and income tax fraud." (Emphasis mine).

"Tax evasion is a serious crime that steals from all responsible taxpayers." Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

The department's criminal investigations will now be led by Risa S. Sugarman, who has 30+ years of enforcement experience. She's joined by Christopher A. Ammirati, the Department's Director of Investigations, who "will supervise the investigators and auditors in the Criminal Investigations Division."
