Minnesota to Tax More Services, June 2013

Minnesota recently passed omnibus tax bill, H677. Besides including an Amazon Tax law,  the bill extends Minnesota sales and use tax to tax some services, including digital services. Retailers who have tax obligations in Minnesota will have to collect sales tax on these services, after June 30, 2013.

The list of taxable services includes:

  • Repairing and maintaining electronic and precision equipment
  • Repairing and maintaining commercial and industrial machinery and equipment.
  • Warehousing or storage services for tangible personal property (with some exceptions).

For a full list of taxable services and exemptions consult H677, Subdivision 3.

Digital goods

The bill levies sales tax on specified digital audiovisual works, including digital books, movies, digital code and other digital products. For a full list of taxable digital goods, please see H677, Subdivision 3.
