 Arizona smokers who have purchased cigarettes online, by mail or by phone may be in for a surprise.

The stale odor of smoke that clings to clothing is relatively immediate. The ill-effects of smoking often take time to make themselves known. Lung cancer and emphysema are typically not revealed until years—even decades—of smoking have passed.

Purchasing cigarettes online, by mail, or by phone in Arizona Department of Revenue. It reads:

“If you have been purchasing cigarettes prior to August 12, 2012; over the internet, by phone or mail order, you may be receiving a letter from the Cigarette Tax Unit.

For voluntary compliance, please call (602) 716-6230 and penalties may be waived.
