Maryland’s Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday, February 2014
- Feb 5, 2014 | Gail Cole

Sales tax on numerous Energy Star appliances will be waived during Maryland’s upcoming sales tax holiday. Shop Maryland Energy starts at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, February 15 and concludes at 11:59 Monday, February 17, 2014.
According to the Maryland Comptroller, the tax-free period “allows consumers who purchase Energy Star qualified appliances to not only save money on the initial purchase, but to conserve energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce future energy expenses, all while simultaneously benefiting Maryland retailers with an increase in sales.”
Maryland Retailers Association President Patrick Donoho called the event “a win for everyone,” as it helps consumers, retailers and the environment.
Provided they meet or exceed “the applicable Energy Star efficiency requirements developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy,” the following items will be exempt from the 6% Maryland sales tax during the holiday:
- Air conditioners and furnaces,
- Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL),
- Heat pumps and programmable thermostats,
- Standard-size refrigerators, and
- Washers and dryers.
