New York: Erie County to Exempt Solar Energy Systems


 Exempt in Erie County, New York, effective June 1, 2014.

To promote the use of environmentally friendly energy sources, Erie County, New York, has decided to exempt sales and installations of commercial solar energy systems equipment. Currently, such sales and installations are subject to the local rate of 4.75%. The new exemption takes effect June 1, 2014.

The following New York taxing jurisdictions also provide an exemption from sales tax for sales and installations of commercial solar energy systems equipment:

  • Broome County;
  • Rockland County;
  • Suffolk County;
  • Tompkins County (outside the city of Ithaca); and
  • Westchester County (outside the cities of Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, White Plains, and Yonkers).
