Chicago E911 Surcharge Increase

  • Jul 23, 2014 | Gail Cole

Chicago: E911 rate changes are coming.

The Chicago, Illinois, E911 surcharge on billed subscribers of telecommunications services will increase from $2.50 to $3.90, effective September 1, 2014.

The Chicago E911 surcharge on sales of prepaid wireless telecommunications services, which was set to expire on July 1, 2014, instead will increase from 7% to 9%. The change takes effect October 1, 2014.

Both changes were imposed by the Chicago City Council.

As a result of the changes, telecommunications retailers of billed telecommunications services must file two separate E911 tax returns. The first return will be for the period July 1, 2014 through August 31, 2014, at the rate of $2.50. The second return will be for the period September 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015, at the rate of $3.90.

Online monthly payments and monthly payments made with payment coupons are still permitted, so long as they reflect the rate changes.

Additional information is available through the City of Chicago.
