Virginia Fuels Tax Rate Increases, January 2015

Virginia needs the gas tax revenue to fund education and transportation projects.

It seems safe to say that federal lawmakers did not / will not pass internet sales tax legislation in 2014. As a result, gasoline taxes in Virginia will increase on January 1, 2015.

Fuel type Rates per Gallon July 1 - December 31, 2014 Rates per Gallon Effective January 1, 2015
Gasoline 0.111 0.162
Blended Fuels (Gasoline) 0.111 0.162
Alternative Fuels 0.111 per GGE 0.162 per GGE

Tax rates for diesel fuel and blended fuel (diesel) remain the same, at 0.202. The rate for aviation fuels stays 0.05.

According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, the new gas tax rate of 16.2 cents per gallon will remain in place "until such time as Congress enacts the Marketplace Fairness Act. In the event that Congress enacts such changes, DMV will update these rates and notify taxpayers of the change."
