Amazon to Collect Illinois Sales Tax, February 2015
- Jan 30, 2015 | Gail Cole

It was bound to happen eventually, and now it has. Amazon.com will collect Illinois sales tax beginning February 1, 2015.
There are two good reasons for the company to do so.
- On January 1, 2015, a remote sales tax law took effect. It requires out-of-state sellers doing a certain amount of business in Illinois to collect and remit Illinois sales tax. Amazon does enough business to qualify.
- Amazon is building a distribution facility in Illinois that will open in 2015 and employ more than 1,000 people by 2017. A physical presence creates nexus and triggers a sales tax collection obligation.
Whatever the reason, the world’s largest online retailer has confirmed that it will collect Illinois sales tax starting Sunday, February 1.
