South Dakota: Tax Rate Change for Motorcycle Rentals
- Mar 19, 2015 | Gail Cole

The governor of South Dakota has signed into law legislation that imposes a tax of 4.5% on the gross receipts of the rental of certain motorcycles. Motorcycles are big business in the home state of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which will celebrate its 75th anniversary in August 2015.
The new gross receipts tax is in lieu of the excise tax on motor vehicles but is in addition to any applicable sales or use tax. Failure to pay the gross receipts tax is a Class 1 misdemeanor. SB 93 will take effect later this year.
