South Dakota Fuel Tax Changes, April 2015
- Apr 7, 2015 | Gail Cole

A new law on the books imposes several South Dakota excise tax changes, effective April 1, 2015.
The excise tax rate on the purchase of a motor vehicle increased from 3% to 4%. South Dakota also now imposes a fuel excise tax rate of $0.28 per gallon for motor fuels and special fuels. The rate for ethyl alcohol and methyl alcohol is now $0.14 per gallon.
The $0.28 per gallon tax on biodiesel and biodiesel blends will drop by $0.02 per gallon once South Dakota biodiesel production facilities “reach a name plate capacity of at least twenty million gallons per year and fully produce at least ten million gallons of biodiesel within one year as determined by the secretary of revenue." Please see Senate Bill 1 for additional details.
