Will California Allow Higher Local Sales Tax Rates?
- Apr 8, 2015 | Gail Cole

Lawmakers in California are currently considering legislation that could increase the maximum local sales tax rate by 1%.
Under current law, cities and counties may “levy a transactions and use tax for general purposes, … including a requirement that the combined rate of all taxes imposed in accordance with that law in the county not exceed 2%.”
Assembly Bill 464 seeks to grant specifically authorized other local governmental entities the same right. It also would “increase that maximum combined rate to 3%.”
