Kansas Tax Amnesty Starts September 1, 2015

Update, 7.29.2015: The Kansas Department of Revenue has released 2015 tax amnesty program FAQs.
To increase state tax revenue and decrease the number of outstanding taxes, the state of Kansas is offering a tax amnesty program this fall. It applies to “interest and penalties on tax debt accrued for tax periods ending on or before December 31, 2013.” Accounts that are currently in appeal do not qualify for tax amnesty.
According to Revenue Secretary Nick Jordan, “The amnesty program allows taxpayers who have delinquent taxes to erase their debt without the added cost of the penalties and interest that might have been assessed.” In order for the penalties and interest to be waived, the tax debt must be paid in full during the amnesty program, which runs September 1 - October 15, 2015.
The amnesty program applies to the following:
- Cigarette and tobacco products tax
- Estate tax
- Income tax
- Liquor drink tax
- Liquor enforcement tax
- Mineral severance tax
- Privilege tax
- Sales and compensating use tax (both state and local)
- Withholding and estimated tax
