Amazon Expands Presence in Illinois

Amazon opening new center in Illinois.

Amazon.com began collecting Illinois sales tax on February 1, 2015, a month after the state’s new remote sales tax law took effect and a few months after the company revealed plans to open facilities in Illinois.

Last spring, the giant e-tailer leased a warehouse on Goose Island to support same-day delivery in the Chicago area. Now the company has the announced the creation of a new 5,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Joliet, Illinois, where it will employ 1,000 people, full-time.

The e-tailer’s physical presence in Illinois will undoubtedly create new sales tax obligations for certain Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) sellers. Automated sales tax Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) facilitates sales tax compliance for businesses selling into multiple jurisdictions. Read the FBA Seller’s Guide to Sales Tax for more information.
