Washington: Higher Penalties for Late Tax Payments
- Aug 3, 2015 | Gail Cole
Money motivates. If it hurts to pay bills, it hurts even more to pay late fees on top of those bills. That’s why businesses as diverse as parking garages, credit card companies, and state departments of revenue impose penalties on late payments.
In Washington State, the penalty for late tax payments is about to go up. Beginning August 1, 2015, taxpayers whose returns and payments are not received by the due date will pay the following penalties:
- 9% for payments received between one day after the due date and the last day of the month following the due date. Previously 5%.
- 19% for payments received between the first day of the second month following the due date and the last day of that month.Previously 15%.
- 29% for payments received the first day of the third month and thereafter.Previously 25%.
See the department’s Special Notice, Late Payment Penalties Increase, for additional information.
