The 76th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally runs August 8 – 14, 2016 in Sturgis, South Dakota. Last year, the 75th rally drew larger than normal crowds and brought in 45% more revenue than the previous year. The revenue increase is attributable in part to new sales tax reporting requirements.
Vendors descend upon Sturgis and neighboring Buffalo Chip to sell food, lodging and swag. The South Dakota Department of Revenue is reminding all temporary vendors that a Temporary South Dakota Sales Tax license is required to sell or display products or to provide services at the rally. Returning vendors must complete a new application every year. Permanent vendors who intend sell (or display) goods or services at the rally must also obtain a temporary sales tax license — the permanent sales tax license is not valid at the rally.
First time vendors must also post a $500 bond. Returning vendors who filed and remitted sales tax collected during the 2015 rally on time are not required to post the bond in 2016. However, taxpayers who filed late returns last year must post the bond.
Applications are available at the South Dakota Department of Revenue office in Rapid City through August 1. Beginning August 2, applications are available only at the Sturgis City Hall. Additional information is available from the South Dakota Department of Revenue.
