Mississippi sales tax rate change, January 2017
- Dec 13, 2016 | Gail Cole

Situated on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Pascagoula was once a sleepy fishing village. Today, it is home to the state’s largest employer, Ingalls Shipbuilding, and several businesses involved in the oil industry. It is also the birthplace of Jimmy Buffett.
Beginning January 1, 2017, Pascagoula will levy a special 2% tax on the gross proceeds of sales of restaurants located within city limits. “Restaurant” means all places where prepared food and beverages are sold for consumption, including:
- Cafeterias
- Grocery and convenience stores
- Hotel and motel dining rooms
- Lunch stands
Food and beverages sold at schools, hospitals, and convalescent or nursing homes are not subject to the special tax. Additional information, including the rate code, is available from the Mississippi Department of Revenue.
