You’ve done the research and determined that your business has sales tax nexus in Texas. By having nexus, you are required to collect state sales tax and comply with all Texas sales tax laws. But don’t worry -- Texas was recently named one of the 10 most favorable states to do business, and the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts is there to make doing business in Texas a breeze.

One of the first things you must do as a new business in Texas or when doing business within the state for the first time is to register for a Sales and Use Tax Permit. There is no fee to register for the permit; however, you may be required to post a bond or security.

To apply for the permit, you or your parent/legal guardian must be at least 18 years old. You’ll also be required to provide basic information regarding your business, including the owners’ and officers’ social security numbers, federal identification numbers, and North American Industrial Classification Systems (“NAICS”) code. For new businesses, it’s best if you apply for a federal identification number prior to applying for a sales tax permit; however, if you don’t have one yet, the Comptroller will issue the permit under a temporary number. You can register for the sales tax permit online, in person, or by mail.

The Comptroller offers a convenient online registration application for a number of tax permits. First-time users will be asked to create a profile, which you can later use to update your account, such as changing your mailing address or reporting the addition or closure of business locations. A step-by-step instruction guide can help you with any questions during the application process.

Register for Texas Sales Tax in Person

If you have questions regarding the online application or if you prefer to speak to a customer representative in person, you can visit one of the state’s 23 Taxpayer Services and Collections field offices. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
