We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced Sr. Site Reliability Engineer to join our team.

In support of the Avalara SaaS suite, the Senior Site Reliability Engineer is responsible for the
security, reliability, and efficiency of our production systems. The team is responsible for
maintaining service up-time in 24 x 7 environments, meet client expectations of accessible data
services, and analyzing data for Tier1 client support tickets when requested.

The Senior Site Reliability Engineer will create multi-cloud infrastructure with an eye on
ensuring host interconnectivity subject to security and networking best-practices, enhance
monitors, troubleshoot Windows and Linux applications, write tools & automation, and help
shape the design of the future platform architecture. Additionally, the Senior Site Reliability
Engineer develops support plans for applications and adheres to those plans to meet production
SLAs.

The Avalara product suite mixes Windows/SQL environments with many additional open-source
applications present in a Linux environment. The platform role supports multiple projects and
requires interactions and partnerships with teams and personnel from numerous business
locations, skill sets, and backgrounds. The position requires a solid foundation of technical skills,
analytical abilities, end-to-end troubleshooting techniques, and the ability and willingness to
communicate in a clear and concise manner.

Essential Operational Engineering Skills:

Recommend application changes to improve application performance
Experience with networking/connectivity in cloud environments
Experience maintaining AWS and/or GCP cloud infrastructure
Experience in Administration, Management, and Troubleshooting of Applications relied upon by
multiple teams., with a preference for *nix based experience.
Experience with containerized applications and Kubernetes container orchestration.

Other Duties:

Provide technical escalation and share in the on-call rotation
Work independently and collaboratively, as required for the project at hand
Review existing processes and recommend changes or institute new processes as necessary,
including the areas of monitoring, upgrades, tuning, reliability, security, and scalability, etc.
Generate high-quality project documentation, such as architecture designs, implementation plans,
design documents, test plans, etc.
Participate in on-call 24/7 rotation.
Assist in documenting processes, Platform Team products, and investigations.

Technical Qualifications:

At least 8+ years of experience in a SAAS operating environment
BS degree or equivalent experience.
Deep expertise in the mentality, processes, and tools needed to deliver five nines SLAs.
Strong working knowledge of Windows or Linux operating systems and underlying components,
system statistics, performance tuning, file systems and I/O.
Experience with networking concepts as applied in cloud environments: TCP/IP, protocols,
routing, implementation of security rules
Experience with either .NET or Linux in AWS and/or GCP. Azure experience is helpful but not
required.
Solid scripting skills in Bash, Python, Golang, or PowerShell and experience with automating workloads
Experience with production deployment, monitoring, and operational support for enterprise-class
applications
Experience in performance diagnostics, capacity planning, performance architecture design,
performance tuning, performance monitoring
Experience working with load-balanced high-traffic solutions/services.
Experience in SQL and database services
Good verbal and written communication skills

Technologies you are likely to be working with: AWS, GCP, GitLab, Atlassian suite, Python,
PowerShell, Terraform, C#, Sumologic, Grafana, Docker and Kubernetes container
orchestration.

Preferred Qualification:
Can-do attitude -- no problem is too big or too small.
A desire to delight customers.
A systematic problem solver, with the ability to think outside the box.
Good data analysis skills to pick up trends before they become major problems.
Previous experience as an enterprise-class Site Reliability Engineer
A strong mix of Software Engineer and Operation Support skills.
Eager to learn new technologies, techniques, and programming languages.
