How to Override Sales Tax Rates in Shopify

  • Apr 4, 2015 | Ryan O'Donnell

There are times when it makes sense to override sales tax collection. Some businesses find themselves in unique taxation situations where some products are taxed in certain states but others are not. In other situations, sellers need to apply specific tax rates. In this post, we'll walk you through how to override tax collection in Shopify.

If you're working on setting up tax overrides, we're going to assume you already know how to set up sales tax collection in Shopify.

Let's begin by navigating to the Taxes dashboard by clicking on 'Taxes' in the left hand menu.

Shopify Tax Dashboard

Once you have navigated to the Taxes dashboard, click "Add tax override" to manually control the amount of sales tax you charge to a defined destination. Select the destination to open the tax override pop up.

You should now see the destinations you have entered into your Shopify account. In our case, that is the state of Washington > King County > Seattle. The tax rates you see listed are those supplied by the Shopify tax calculator. Update with your new tax rate and click "Add override".
