Intro to WordPress for Accountants and Bookkeepers

Avalara is pleased to publish industry thought leaders who help accountants, bookkeepers and other tax professionals be the best they can be.

Once you have begun to establish your brand, then you can begin to develop, or re-design your web presence. It’s important to note here that this is not a set it and forget it situation. Your brand is your business’ personality. Is your personality today the same as it was last year? 5 years ago? I hope not. Our experiences shape us, and like us, they shape our businesses too. This is important to remember, because it means that our websites will need to be dynamic. As I give you this introduction to WordPress for accountants and bookkeepers, it’s important to understand that your website, like your brand, is a living, breathing entity.

The reason I like WordPress is that it is very easy to update. When I talk to a lot of accountants and bookkeepers, about what frustrates them most, about their website, the answer is usually some form of the fact that they have to rely on the developer to make updates. Often times, there is something timely. A hot topic, that you want to post.

One of the worst things you can do for your brand is stifle it, by allowing yourself to be dependent on someone else to make updates to the very platform from which your brand’s voice is spoken!

In this first post about WordPress I am going to cover the very first thing that you’re going to want to do. We’re going to get ONE page up that says,

“Hey thank you so much for stopping by!

We’re working on building a remarkable website, with the intention of delivering incredible value to you.

In order to do that we have to bring you this page temporarily.

Forgive us for that, but…

The best thing you can do is call us at (866) 555-1212

and a live human will either answer, or get back to you very, very shortly.”

The other thing you’ll notice I am starting with, is a video. Once that page is up, we can work on the site in the background. Then when we’re ready to go live, all we have to do is swap out the home page. It’s easy. Trust me. Actually don’t trust me. Watch the video, and I’ll prove it!

Note. The video for this is about 30 minutes. What that shows you is how in about 30 minutes you can get a functional website up, using WordPress. Then we can add to it, and make changes to it.

The single most important thing on your website is making sure the people know how to contact you!
