Amazon will handle Washington sales tax for marketplace sellers as of Jan. 1, 2018

  • Nov 14, 2017

According to Amazon’s seller forums, the ecommerce giant will collect and remit Washington sales tax for third-party sellers beginning Jan. 1, 2018.

Washington’s new marketplace fairness law, which takes effect Jan. 1, requires Amazon either to collect and remit tax on its marketplace sales, or comply with onerous use tax notice and reporting requirements. Similar laws are scheduled to take effect in Pennsylvania on Mar. 1, 2018, and in Minnesota on July 1, 2019.

A Rhode Island marketplace facilitator tax law went into effect last August. Amazon’s position on that law is unknown; however, the company is fighting an assessment on its South Carolina marketplace sales.
