Algerian VAT rate changes

Algeria has changed some of the rates and treatments of certain goods and services in its Finance Law 2014. Algerian VAT is currently levied at 17%, with a reduced VAT rate of 7% on basic foods and other primary goods.

The changes to the VAT regime include:

  • A number of metals are now not liable to customs import duties, but instead are liable to the reduced VAT rate of 7%
  • Electronic book downloads are now liable to the 7% VAT rate
  • Leasing of cabling for broadband internet supplies will remain VAT exempt until the start of 2021
  • Taxable persons are no longer required to produce lists of suppliers in order to deduct VAT
  • Poultry industry supply industry is to have its VAT exemption extend until August 2014
  • The VAT exemption on the ship building industry has been lifted
