KEY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will work closely with the Digital Strategy, Product and Audience Marketing, and Content teams to identify user needs and goals, and deliver an outstanding avalara.com web experience that clearly communicates the value and scope of the products and solutions that Avalara offers.


  • Effectively translate strategy requirements, marketing goals and prospect needs, into page requirements that create real and enduring value, evidenced by exceeding Avalara marketing goals in traffic, conversion rates, and opportunities created.

  • Capably work with the digital experience team to communicate design strategy, decisions and rationale.

  • Develop expertise in our audience segments, and products.

The Web Designer will work with the digital experience, and development teams to create and communicate interaction, information architecture, and visual design decisions in the most appropriate forms, from user stories, to wireframes to high fidelity prototypes resulting in an outstanding avalara.com website.


  • Lead, or participate in a wide range of user-centered research projects including usability testing, contextual and stakeholder interviews, concept testing, a\\b testing, card sorting, surveys, and competitive research.

  • Card sorting

  • Tree jack testing

  • Present and rationalize research plans, approaches and results to diverse audiences through written reports and oral presentations.

  • Develop and maintain design mockups, user flows, wireframe, detailed specifications and other design documents as needed.

  • Present and rationalize visual, interaction design decisions to diverse audiences through written reports and oral presentations.

  • Prototype concepts and validate design direction with appropriate user and stakeholder input.

  • Work closely with the development team to deliver a phenomenal user experience through improved components.

  • Manage the design process, drive decisions, track issues, and assist in estimating resource needs and schedules.

  • Understand technical and operational capabilities and constraints to ensure that our proposed solutions can be delivered on schedule.

  • Document page construction requirements with appropriate mockups, redlines and assets, acceptance criteria and work closely with the web production team to deliver the final product.

The web designer will also work closely with other members of the design team, to


  • Follow, and identify potential improvements to web design team processes.

  • Solicit appropriate feedback and input to improve designs, and research plans, strategies.

  • Create and maintain web style guide and design system

ESSENTIAL POSITION COMPETENCIES AND REQUIREMENTS

Education


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of workplace experience, education and/or training is required.

Experience


  • 2+ years' experience in a design role with emphasis in web and mobile web design.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Proficient in at least one of visual design, interaction design, information architecture, user testing, competitive research. Identified and actively improving at least one more.

  • Demonstrated experience with following user interface design best practices and guidelines in web design.

  • Ability to transfer user research into simple, intuitive user interfaces and experiences.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of web accessibility principles and experience in building for web accessibility.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of user experience testing methodologies including usability testing, A/B testing, focus groups, and surveys.

  • Strong analytical skills and data-driven thinking. Must possess the ability to analyze and present data and research with credibility.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively build relationships with customers, executive management, and other stakeholders through positive interaction and problem identification and resolution.

  • Solid judgment, problem solving, and cognitive skills. Demonstrated ability to define, develop, and analyze performance measures and metrics.

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and facilitate teamwork with multidisciplinary groups.
