File IRS Form 1098-E online

Avalara 1099 & W-9 supports the e-filing and e-delivery of many IRS form types, including Form 1098-E for reporting student loan interest.

What is Form 1098-E and when is it required?

Form 1098-E reports student loan interest a borrower has paid during the tax year. This form is issued by lenders to the borrower and to the IRS. It provides details about the interest paid on qualified student loans, which can be used to claim a student loan interest deduction on income tax returns.

Lenders must file Form 1098-E with the IRS for each borrower who has paid $600 or more in student loan interest during the tax year. This includes reporting:

  • Interest paid on federal student loans
  • Interest paid on private student loans

Can I file Form 1098-E online?

Yes. You can e-file Form 1098-E through the IRS website or by mail. You may also use Avalara 1099 & W-9 to streamline the e-filing process and help prevent costly errors.

What are the IRS deadlines for filing Form 1098-E?

  • Send copies to recipients by January 31.
  • E-file with the IRS by March 31.

When these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day.

Do I need to file Form 1098-E with state tax agencies?

It depends. Some states require you to file Form 1098-E directly, especially if state income tax was withheld or if you’re not using the IRS Combined Federal/State Filing Program (CF/SF). Requirements, deadlines, and formats vary by state.

What qualifies as a student loan for the purposes of a 1098-E?

A qualified student loan is any loan taken out solely to pay for higher education expenses for the borrower, their spouse, or their dependents. The loan must be used for qualified educational expenses, such as tuition, fees, or room and board.
