File IRS Form 1099-B online

Avalara 1099 & W-9 supports the e-filing and e-delivery of many IRS form types, including Form 1099-B for reporting brokerage and barter exchange transactions.

What is Form 1099-B and when is it required?

Form 1099-B reports proceeds from the sale of securities, such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, as well as barter exchanges. This form is issued by brokers or barter exchanges to taxpayers that sell or trade securities during the tax year.

Brokers must file Form 1099-B when they facilitate transactions including:

  • Sales of stocks, bonds, or mutual funds
  • Exchanges of securities
  • Barter transactions
  • Redemptions of certain financial instruments

Can I file Form 1099-B online?

Yes. You can e-file Form 1099-B through the IRS website or by mail. You may also use Avalara 1099 & W-9 to streamline the e-filing process and help prevent costly errors.

What are the IRS deadlines for filing Form 1099-B?

  • Send copies to recipients by February 15.
  • E-file with the IRS by March 31.

When these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day.

Do I need to file Form 1099-B with state tax agencies?

It depends. Some states require you to file Form 1099-B directly, especially if state income tax was withheld or if you’re not using the IRS Combined Federal/State Filing Program (CF/SF). Requirements, deadlines, and formats vary by state.

Do brokers need to file a 1099-B for a retirement account?

No. Transactions within tax-advantaged accounts like IRAs and 401(k)s are not reportable on a 1099-B since gains or losses within these accounts are not taxed until distributions are made.
