File IRS Form 1098-Q online

Avalara 1099 & W-9 supports the e-filing and e-delivery of many IRS form types, including Form 1098-Q for qualifying longevity annuity contracts (QLACs).

What is Form 1098-Q and when is it required?

Form 1098-Q reports information about qualifying longevity annuity contracts (QLACs) held within a retirement plan. This form is issued by insurance companies or institutions to the contract holder and to the IRS. It provides contract details such as value and required distributions start date.

Insurance companies or financial institutions must file Form 1098-Q with the IRS for each individual holding a QLAC. This includes reporting:

  • The value of the QLAC
  • The required distributions start date

Can I file Form 1098-Q online?

Yes. You can e-file Form 1098-Q through the IRS website or by mail. You may also use Avalara 1099 & W-9 to streamline the e-filing process and help prevent costly errors.

What are the IRS deadlines for filing Form 1098-Q?

  • Send copies to recipients by January 31.
  • E-file with the IRS by March 31.

When these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day.

Do I need to file Form 1098-Q with state tax agencies?

It depends. Some states require you to file Form 1098-Q directly, especially if state income tax was withheld or if you’re not using the IRS Combined Federal/State Filing Program (CF/SF). Requirements, deadlines, and formats vary by state.

What information is required to file a 1098-Q with the IRS?

Form 1098-Q requires details including the value of the QLAC as of the end of the calendar year, the required start date for QLAC distributions, the contract holder’s taxpayer identification number (typically a Social Security number), and information about the issuer and the retirement plan holding the QLAC.

What if the contract holder’s information changes after the 1098-Q is filed?

If the contract holder’s information, such as their address or taxpayer identification number, changes after the form has been filed, a corrected Form 1098-Q should be submitted to the IRS and the updated form should also be sent to the contract holder.
