File IRS Form 1099-K online

Avalara 1099 & W-9 supports the e-filing and e-delivery of many IRS form types, including Form 1099-K for debit and credit card transactions from third-party payment networks.

What is Form 1099-K and when is it required?

Form 1099-K reports payments made through payment cards or third-party networks. A 1099-K is required for marketplace sellers when they meet a minimum reporting threshold. That threshold has varied a lot in recent years, rising as high as $20,000 and sinking as low as $600. However, marketplace sellers are not the only entities responsible for filing the 1099-K. A 1099-K may also apply to:

  • Small businesses that accept credit card payments for their services
  • Freelancers that use third-party networks to receive payments from their clients

Can I file Form 1099-K online?

Yes. You can e-file Form 1099-K through the IRS website or by mail. You may also use Avalara 1099 & W-9 to streamline the e-filing process and help prevent costly errors.

What are the IRS deadlines for filing Form 1099-K?

  • Send copies to recipients by January 31.
  • E-file with the IRS by March 31.

When these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day.

Do I need to file Form 1099-K with state tax agencies?

It depends. Some states require you to file Form 1099-K directly, especially if state income tax was withheld or if you’re not using the IRS Combined Federal/State Filing Program (CF/SF). Requirements, deadlines, and formats vary by state.

Am I required to electronically file 1099-Ks with the IRS?

If you are required to file 10 or more 1099-Ks with the IRS, you must e-file them rather than use postal mail, unless you specifically request a waiver from the IRS.
